ENG-3109 Indigenous Literatures of North America - 10 ECTS

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS), or equivalent qualification, in English literature, or a degree combining English literature and a closely-related discipline (minimum 80 ECTS in English). An average grade equivalent to C or better (in the Norwegian grading system) is required.

Course content

Contemproary critical theories including feminism, postcolonialsim, and ecocriticism have benefited from the insights of Native American peoples who have survived five hundred years of conquest of their lands, languages, and collective memories. Increasingly  literature by indigenous writers is included in the literary canon. These writers are trained in Western forms, and they are adept at mediating between worlds through masking, displacement, invention, and revival of tradition. In this course we will explore some of the intersections between traditional storytelling and contemporary narrative forms. We will also examine the various ways in which story functions as strategy of cultural survival and  method of critical analysis.

Recommended previous qualifications is a BA in literature or a BA in literature and language. A good command of both written and oral English is also required.


Objectives of the course

The course emphasizes theoretical approaches and analytical methods important to the study of contemporary narrative and literary criticism.

Teaching methods

26 hours of teaching with seminars and lectures. About 12 weeks with 2 hours lectures a week, as well as seminars in which the students present short essays related to their own work.
