Increasingly literature by indigenous writers is included in the literary canon. These writers are trained in Western forms, and they are adept at mediating between worlds through masking, displacement, invention, and revival of tradition. In this course we will explore some of the intersections between traditional storytelling and contemporary narrative forms. We will also examine the various ways in which story functions as strategy of cultural survival and method of critical analysis.
