autumn 2025
STE-3610 Satellite Communication - 5 ECTS
Admission requirements
A relevant undergraduate Bachelor in Engineering, primarily within electronics or space technology.
In addition, the following requirements must be met:
- minimum 25 credits in mathematics (equivalent to Mathematical Methods 1, 2 og 3), 5 credits in statistics and 7,5 ects i physics on a higher level is required.
Application code: 9371
Objectives of the course
After passing the course, students will have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding:
路 Introduction to satellite communications: communications, satellite systems, onboard components, link budget, inter-satellites and satellite-ground communications
路 Modulation techniques are popularly used in satellite communications: this is important to understand and know how they affect to the communication performance of the system. Understand how to choose the right modulation for specific condition and demand.
路 Multiple access schemes: This is essential when working share spectrum or resource. Due to the long propagation delay between satellite and ground users, a proper set of multiple access methods needed to be studied and evaluated through the course.
路 Link budget: to have a successful design for satellite communication system, link budget design is a must step at the early step. Link budget is a study itself which will be significantly dependent on the frequency band, the orbit, and in some cases receive much impact from the environments.
路 Networking: data communication and networking between satellite as well as between satellite and ground station is also an important part that students will learn through the course including theoretical analysis and practices.
