GEO-3151 Geo-seminar in energy and environment - 10 stp
The course is administrated by
Institutt for geovitenskap
Type of course
This course is available as a single course.
Course contents
This research-oriented seminar includes in-depth discussions on selected contemporary topics in energy and environment, current technological developments and research directions, recent publications, etc. The course aims at fostering and developing scientific curiosity around the course theme and a critical reflection of representativeness, accuracy, reliability and importance of the data and results. The course consists of overview presentations, seminar presentations on selected topics given by the students, and a discussion about the topic prepared and led by the students. Thereby, the students will acquire skills in using scientific literature, being able to read, understand and discuss research by others, and learn how to present scientific results both in written form and orally.
Admission requirements
Bachelor's degree in geology, or a similar degree following a programme of study of at least three years duration, or similar education approved in accordance with the Norwegian Universities Act section 3-4. In addition, specialization in geology worth the equivalent of at least 80 ECTS credits is required. Normally, an average mark of C or better is required at the bachelor's degree level or other programme for basis of admission. Application code: 9371.
Objective of the course
Knowledge
The student has
- an understanding of the relationship between energy (sources, production, transport and consumption) and the environment with particular focus on the global urgency regarding carbon and climate change.
- a basic understanding of a number of technologies for mitigating climate change and its challenges.
- an understanding of the principles of carbon capture and storage.
- an understanding of past and present geological processes that remobilize carbon and have the potential to drive climate change.
Skills
The student can
- identify and describe present energy use, trends, and impacts.
- evaluate present and future technological challenges and changes.
- use literature, evidence and critical thinking to make informed decisions regarding energy use and complex environmental challenges.
General competences
The student can
- be thoughtful, engaged, informed and articulate in professional and personal arenas regarding energy and environmental issues.
- carry out the most important elements of geological research projects: penetrating literature, analyzing data, and communicating results written and orally to fellow students/scientists.
- work independent and in a team.
